How to measure acidity of activated bleaching earth?

Here are a few tips to help you when you want to go about measuring acidity of activated bleaching earth. pH is the amount of acidity of any solvent. The values of pH range from zero to fourteen. When a solution has a pH of seven it is said to be neutral. A value that is greater than seven shows that the solvent is in a condition of acidity. If the value is less than seven then this shows that the solvent is in a condition that is acidic. pH stands for potential of hydrogen.

A litmus paper is normally used to find out the pH value of a solvent. In case the color of the litmus paper turns to red it will indicate that the solvent has a high acidity. In case the color of the litmus paper turns to blue the solution has a high basicity. It is also possible to go about measuring acidity of activated bleaching earth by using something other than a litmus paper. You can for example also make use of a pH meter which works on the principle of a solution’s electrolyte.

Measuring acidity of activated bleaching earth is easy and involves a few basic steps. The first thing that you need to do is weigh the fuller’s earth. You should weigh up to five grams of fuller’s earth. Mix this with about fifty milliliters of water. Take this mixture and stir it until the fuller’s earth and water are properly mixed.

Next, take the mixture and place it into the litmus paper or a pH meter. Check the color of the litmus paper and see if it turns blue or red. Alternatively, you can check the results of the pH meter. Normally, activated bleaching earth has a pH value of three or three and a half. If the value of fullers earth is less than three it shows that the fullers earth was not washed until clean from acid sulphate when the fuller’s earth was activated. This means that there is potential that using the fuller’s earth in a refinery process machine will cause damage or corrosion. These are basically the elementary steps that you need to take in order to measure the acidity of activated bleaching earth. If you follow these steps exactly you will find it easy to find out just how acidic the activated bleaching earth is.
